UTA Trax Program Boosts Sustainability and Convenience for University of Utah Sports Fans

When the University of Utah decided to give its TRAX lines color-coded names, it chose a fitting moniker for the line that travels to the U. Now, students and staff who attend Utes games can enjoy free fare on game days thanks to a new program launched by the university.

The University of Utah has been one of the largest purchasers of Utah Transit Authority (UTA) passes and fares, with an analysis showing that it spent $3.3 million in 2012 for UTA passes alone, accounting for 8.3 percent of all fare revenue. This year, the university is paying UTA a total of $300,000 for its services, which will be re-evaluated next year.

The free-fare program applies to athletic events including football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and gymnastics, among others. With this new initiative, the university hopes to increase attendance and encourage more people to use public transportation. In fact, Director of Commuter Services Alma Allred expects that the number of people taking advantage of the free fare will approach 10,000 this year.

The program is not only a boon for students and staff but also aims to reduce parking demand during university events. Last year, UTA provided extra TRAX trains at football games, which helped move around 4,500 fans off campus within half an hour after the game was completed. This new initiative is designed to decrease that demand even further.

In addition to TRAX and FrontRunner trains, University of Utah sports tickets will also serve as free fare on game days for Utah Transit Authority buses. With this expanded coverage, fans can easily attend games without worrying about transportation costs.

This program not only benefits the university community but also supports the state's commitment to sustainability. As Allred noted, 'This program was designed to decrease the demand for parking during U. athletic events and to enhance the university's commitment to sustainability.'
